September in the Square
Finally: A book club announcement!
Dear Readers,
This should have gone out a week ago, but Kate got called away to help with some family stuff out of state (everything’s fine), so we’re calling a do-over on the first week of September. Happy Labor Day! Feel free to tell your boss we said you don’t have to work on Monday.
Update on Hours and Closings
Friday, September 12: Closed for inventory.
Wednesday, October 1: Fall/Winter hours begin. The store will once again be open 11-6, Tuesday through Saturday, and 11-5 on Sunday.
Saturday, October 4: Closing early at 4:30 p.m. (90 minutes of lost business is better than one of us being mad about missing Angela Davis and Nicole Mitchell at the Chicago Humanities Festival.)
Tuesday, October 14-Thursday, October 16: Closed so we can both go to a bookselling conference out of state.
September/October Book Club Pick: Fresh, Green Life

First, thanks a million to the folks who came out for our first two book club meetings! We had two incredible discussions of Sakina’s Kiss, and we’re so excited to see what people have to say about our next pick: Fresh, Green Life, by Sebastian Castillo. Copies will be in the store early next week and can be purchased from Bookshop any time.
Because of Kate’s lost week, we’re also moving the dates for the next book club meetings. Please come to either one of two sessions to discuss Fresh, Green Life, and please RSVP at one of the links below, so we know how many chairs to put out:
To get ahead of things before our next meeting, we’d love it if you’d fill out this two-question survey. That’s for anyone who’s interested in participating in future book clubs, not just those who already have!
Upcoming Events
We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve rescheduled our canceled event from July. Kevin Smokler and Maureen Ryan will be at the store on Thursday, October 21, to discuss Kevin’s new book, Break the Frame: Conversations with Women Filmmakers.
Also, save the date: On November 13, we’ll be hosting the Chicago launch of Max Delsohn’s new short story collection from Graywolf Press, Crawl. Max will be in conversation with Riley Yaxley.
All right, if we send this right now, you’ll still have a couple hours to get out to the Jarvis Square Rummage Sale, which goes until 3 today (Saturday the 6th). The Square will also be buzzing again next Saturday, when the monthly Artisan Market returns. See you soon?
Yr faithful booksellers,
Kate & Michael
