Music & Arts & Book Club

Jarvis Square Music & Arts Fest begins at 1 p.m., plus book club news!

Dear Readers,

Just a quick note to highlight two things:

1) The Jarvis Square Music & Arts Fest is today. Is the weather perfect? It’s Chicago, of course not. But the show must go on, and it’s gonna be so good! We’re open until 6, and the music continues through the evening:

2-4 p.m. Jarvis Square favorites Amy Kelly & the Beaver Moon Band

6-7 p.m. All-female Beastie Boys tribute She’s Crafty

8-10 p.m. Full band performance by Finom.

2) We have chosen a novel for the Jarvis Square Books Club! Sakina’s Kiss, by Vivek Shanbhag, author of Ghachar Ghochar (which we happen to have one used copy of at this writing).

The past and present join to create a fascinating and intricate portrait of Venkat, which in turn encompasses the contentious political, gender, and class dynamics of contemporary India. Throughout, Shanbhag is a master of restraint, spinning a deceptively simple story that culminates in an exquisite final act. This one’s a knockout.

The club will meet to discuss Sakina’s Kiss on Tuesday, August 19, at 7 p.m. (In the last newsletter, we said August 18, which is Monday.) It’s free to attend, but please register here, so we know how many of you to expect.

According to UPS tracking, the books we thought would be here by now will actually be here on Tuesday. In the meantime, you can always order through Bookshop!

Okay, that’s it. See you in the Square today?
