Dear Reader,
Kate just spent an embarrassingly long time updating the website (which remains a constant work in progress, don’t @ us), where you can now find upcoming events right on the home page!
But while we’re all here, we’ll tell you about them anyway.
4/25 Independent Bookstore Day
A few reasons to come see us this Saturday, even knowing it will be a zoo:
25% off all new books
50% off select new books
Free Advanced Reading Copies (while supplies last)
$1 Clearance Cart is back
We have copies of all these upcoming event books!
5/3 Debora Masterson at Jarvis Square Tavern

Please join us at Jarvis Square Tavern from 5-7 p.m. to celebrate the launch of very local author Debora Masterson’s novel, Freedom Quest: A Love Story. Debora’s planned a multimedia event with music and images, plus a conversation with our own Kate Harding! Book signing to follow. Free.

We’re excited to partner with Block Club Chicago on their inaugural book club event. (And this time, you don’t really have to read the book beforehand.) Another very local author, Layne Fargo (who recently scored a Netflix deal for her bestselling Wuthering-Heights-on-ice novel, The Favorites), will be in conversation with Block Club Arts Editor Gwen Ihnat. General admission is $10 and includes a drink. General admission plus a copy of The Favorites from your favorite bookstore is $25. We’ll start distributing drink tickets at 6:30 p.m. and start the show at 7. Get your tickets here.
5/10 LitFic Book Club Do-Over: Dealing with the Dead at Charmers

You might recall that Alain Mabanckou’s Dealing with the Dead was our March book. You might also recall that our meeting date was the first day of Daylight Saving Time; we’ll blame that for our failure to achieve a quorum on March 8. When the club met again in April, we decided to have a do-over and push all of the other scheduled books back a month. So please join us on May 10 at 5:30 p.m., on the Horseplay side of Charmers Cafe, to discuss Dealing with the Dead! We also have copies of the (now) June book, Ha Jin’s Looking for Tank Man, in stock for those who’d like to read ahead.
5/13 Nonfiction Book Club: True Color at Charmers

Our next nonfiction book club pick is True Color: The Strange and Spectacular Quest to Define Color—from Azure to Zinc Pink, by genius lexicographer, cussing expert, and friend of the store Kory Stamper’s new book, We’ll meet, as usual, on the Horseplay side of Charmers at 6:30 p.m.
That’s all for now! We hope to see you soon.
-Kate & Michael
