Holiday Update

Holiday hours, book club news, good will and whatnot

Dear Reader,

2025 is almost behind us, and we can’t say we’re all that sad to see it go. We would still love to see you before the year ends, though! We’re open regular hours until Tuesday the 24th, when we’ll be open 11-3. Then the store will close until Friday, January 2.

Last-minute Gifts

Over on Instagram, we posted some of the brand-new books we have in the store, if you’re still looking for presents! And we should point out that wee Hanuman Editions make perfect stocking stuffers. We’ve got most of Series III, a bit of Series II, and a couple of older used titles in the store right now.

If none of that sounds right, you can always come on in and grab a physical gift card for any amount, or order an electronic one here. (Both kinds are redeemable in the store. Bookshop.org sells their own gift cards for new books.) Or maybe someone would love an audiobook credit bundle from Libro.fm? You’ve got options, even after we close on the 24th.

Coming Up

Our next book club meeting will be at Charmers Cafe on Sunday, January 11, at 5:30 p.m. We’re reading Sand-Catcher, by Omar Khalifah, published by Coffee House Press.

This translation, by Barbara Romaine, just won the American Literary Translators Association’s National Translation Award in Prose for 2025, and the judges had this to say about it:

Every now and then a novel cuts through the noise and calls out the truth of the present moment. Omar Khalifah’s Sand-Catcher is that novel, and Barbara Romaine is the translator who brings his wistful story the attention it deserves. With brisk humour and a nuanced view onto the lives of the Palestinian diaspora, the novel follows the travails of four Amman-based journalists tasked with persuading an elderly survivor of the Nakba to share his story. When he refuses, a fracas ensues; and the unraveling of their mission–and indeed of the very possibility of truth-telling–serves as an unerringly timely reminder of all the stories that are not being told today.

A Plea for Art, Poetry, and Science Fiction

Just in general, we’d like more of those things in the world. Specifically, we’d like to take your books in these categories—also graphic novels!—in exchange for credit you can use to buy other books.

These are the hardest sections for us to keep stocked, because they’re all your favorites. If you can spare some books, we’d be most grateful. As always, please email [email protected] to set up a time to come in. Lists of titles and/or pictures of spines are much appreciated.

We’re wishing you all a warm, restful end of the year. We can’t wait to hole up and read for the last few days of 2025. In the meantime, we’re here, and we’d love to see you.
