Dear Reader,

A long time ago, it was Kate’s full-time job to react to political news in writing. These days, it feels like that part of her brain—among others—is simply broken. What is there to say?
The book we read for our literary fiction book club this month, Sand-Catcher, is about how we tell the story of atrocities, who has the right to those stories, and how personal and political narratives transform into history. A few people have asked this week if they can come to the meeting without having read the book. We’ve said yes. Generally speaking, book clubs work better if everyone can speak about the book, but this is a week for being in community with people who believe in human dignity and oppose authoritarianism. If you want to swing by tonight for some sweets and fizzy water and friends, please feel free.
