Reminder: We'll be closed from the 23rd through the 26th

Friends,

Holiday hours are upon us! We’ll be open 11-6 all weekend and closed Monday as usual, then we’ll also be closed on the 24th, 25th, and 26th this week. So now is the time! Come see us! Kate even made a window display of holiday-themed titles, which Michael is calling “a stretch.” You be the judge:

Last-Minute Gift Cards!

Obligatory reminder that we have four kinds of gift cards available! First up, our old school, analog cards, which must be both loaded and used in the store—which means your last chance to get one before next week’s holidays will be Sunday.

Isn’t she cute?

If you can’t make it in by Sunday, you can also support the store and thrill your loved ones by ordering:

Remainders Make Excellent, Affordable Gifts

Do you know about remainders? Sometimes, publishers print too many books to sell through them all in the brief window new bookstores allot them. Those books are then sold at a loss to a wholesaler, who resells them to booksellers at a price that makes them desirable again. We’ve had a few on hand since we opened, but as of last week, we have an entire bookcase of them! Niche academic books, beautiful art books, novels, poetry, history, philosophy... all brand new but priced between $4 and $20.

A few examples of the remainders we have in stock:

  • Queer Blues: The Hidden Figures of Early Blues Music by Darryl W. Bullock, $10

  • Black Friday, by David Goodis, $4

  • Jane Campion on Jane Campion, $10

  • Art for People's Sake: Artists and Community in Black Chicago, 1965-1975 by Rebecca Zorach, $13

  • Clairvoyant of the Small: The Life of Robert Walser by Susan Bernofsky, $5

  • EyeMinded: Living and Writing Contemporary Art, by Kellie Jones, $7

  • Surrealism at Play, by Susan Laxton, $10

If you saw our Instagram and Facebook posts about remainders, you’ll notice that some of the books we told you about less than a week ago are no longer on the list. That’s because we sold out!

We usually only order one or two copies of any given book at a time—new or remaindered—because we just don’t have the space to let multiple copies wait around until the right customer appears 5 or 6 times. We do reorder new books, but remainders frequently go out of stock at the wholesaler—sometimes, the copies we bring in were among the very last available. So if you like our remainder selection, don’t sleep on it! And come back often to check what’s new.

Mushy Year-End Gratitude

We’ve said it before, but we’re going to keep saying it! We are so grateful to be doing this, here in this community. We love meeting our neighbors and finding out about your tastes, so we can make sure you find something great every time you visit. Thank you so much for a fantastic first couple of months, and we can’t wait to collaborate with you on book clubs, events, and other secret plans in 2025.

Happy solstice!

Kate & Michael
